Heading to one of the most remote
parts of the United States has plenty of benefits, but if you are planning a
trip to Unalaska, be aware of our remote location and plan accordingly.
First, travel to the Aleutians is not recommended for people on tight
schedules. Weather in the Aleutians can be unpredictable at times and it is
not unusual for flights in and out of Dutch Harbor to be delayed a day or
two during the summer. In the winter, longer delays are possible. Because of
this, we encourage travelers to purchase trip protection from their travel
agent, AAA, or their private insurance carrier. This protection will pay
your expenses in case things don’t go according to plan, and the cost is
generally recovered from a single night’s stay in a hotel. Allowing a buffer
day at either end of your trip is also a great idea!
* Please note that an airplane flight from Anchorage, a ferry ride from
Homer, or a short stay aboard a cruise ship are the only ways to get to
Unalaska/Dutch Harbor from the contiguous U.S. and mainland Alaska.
