Sports Fishing in Unalaska

Unalaska boasts some of the best fishing found anywhere. Located in the midst of the world's richest fishing grounds, Unalaska's charter boats regularly land world-class halibut and salmon.

The Annual World Record Halibut Derby: Sponsored every summer by the Unalaska/Port of Dutch Harbor Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Chamber of Commerce, this event has been a huge success. With the IGFA Record having been broken two consecutive years in Unalaskan waters, this is the place to catch the world's biggest halibut! Other IGFA records are waiting to be broken. If you plan to fish for something other than halibut, then you will probably need to know when the following fishing seasons are open:

Sockeye Salmon (Reds) 06/20 - 08/16
Humpy Salmon (Pinks) 07/20 - 09/30
Coho Salmon (Silvers) 09/01 - 10/30
Dolly Varden 06/01 - 10/30

Charter Tours: A few charters start operating in May, but all operate from June to September. To guarantee availability, we recommend that you book your trip in advance. Tackle and bait is provided, but there is an extra fee for packaging and shipping fish. If you are here between May 14th and September 16th, be sure to enter the 2001 World Record Halibut Derby for the chance to win $100,000 if you break the IGFA's all-tackle pacific halibut world record.

What should you expect? Summer temperatures can range from 45 degrees to 60 degrees, and weather can rapidly change. We suggest that you dress in layers to be prepared for any weather. The M/V Grand Aleutian supplies any equipment necessary for fishing, but feel free to bring your own. What else should you bring? Camera/camcorder and film, Alaska fishing license (available at local stores or online here), warm clothing (layered), rain gear, waterproof hiking shoes or boots, sunglasses, and enough energy to pull in that big one!
