MuseumoftheAleutians877.581.2612www.unalaska.info3TheMuseumoftheAleutansisagigantc9400squarefootbuildingandistheonlyarchaeologicalresearchandmuseumstoragefacilityfortheAleutanRegion.IthasavastpermanentexhibitofitemsrangingacrossalloftheculturalperiodsthatdevelopedtheUnalaskaregion.FromthevibrantcoastallifeoftheUnanganpeopleaswellastheirinteractonwithRussianfur-traderstotheinfuencetheviolentandinvasiveWWIItactcshadontheAleutpeopledowntocompletecataloguesofeverythingthathasbeenuncoveredinarchaeologicaldigs.Literallynostoneislefunturned.Themuseumschangingexhibithousesanewgalleryatleasteverysixmonthsusuallycoveringlocaleventsanditemsofinterestthatimpactourcommunity.ExhibitscanbeanythingfromlocalartststosomethingcoveringtheRussianOrthodoxChurchorthevariousheavy-laborindustriesthatfuelandfundourcommunity.IntheMuseumsSpecialCollectonsGalleryyoucanfndmanythingsusedbythecoastalself-reliantUnanganpeople.ThemuseumcarriesmanyitemseitherunearthedorreplicatedbyresidentAleutsrangingfromsealorsealiongut-skincoatsusedfortheirwaterproofpropertestoreplicatonsofbeautfullyweavedbasketsandauthentcallypaintedbentwoodhatsthatprovideawealthofinformatonaboutapeoplelostandyetverymuchalivetoday.Themuseumspermanentexhibithousesmanytme-wornrelicsfromtheWWIIperiodincludingweaponsroundsandfeldgearsuchashelmetsandmedkits.Alsocataloguedarepersonalluxuriessuchaslight-spiritedlunchmenusfromthemesshallsanduniquefeldrazorsgivinginsighttothetmesbackthenandhowtheymighthavebeen.AlsoondisplayisanentrecaseofmemorabiliafromtheoriginalReevesairlineswhichhassincebeenreplacedbymoremodernfights.PhotobyJefDay
