www.aleutianfreshseafood.comCall877-581-1864SendagiftofAlaskanSeafoodtoyourSPECIALSOMEONEFAMILYORFRIENDS.OrderonlineatorFax907-581-5681IntheBeginning...2www.unalaska.info877.581.2612Theancestorswhofrsttraveledtotheseislandsaredocumentedroughlyover8000yearsagoknowntoustodayastheUnangansAleuts.Theywereseagoingtribeswhodevelopedanartstcspiritualandphysicalcultureinterwovenwiththesea.Thehighlycomplexcoastlineofthe1050-milelongAleutanIslandchainoferedawidevarietyofenvironmentalrichesforthesetribes.Theancienttribesadaptedtoseamammalshuntngandfshinginsomeoftheworldsmostproductvebutdangerouswaters.TheyestablishedregularroutesupanddowntheAlaskacoastintheirswifbaidarkasknownfortheirexcellentdesignandseaworthiness.Russianexplorersin1759werethefrstEuropeanstoreporttheexistenceofthevillageofIIiuliukmeaningswellingtogetherharmonious.BritshSpanishandAmericanexplorerswouldfollowbutitwastheRussianswhowouldholdclaimtotheislands.AferaninitalatempttodefeattheintruderstheAleutswereforcedtohuntforsealandseaoterfortheRussiannewcomers.UnalaskabecamethefrstpermanentRussiansetlementinRussianAmericaandanimportantseaoterhuntngbase.In1824FatherIvanVeniaminofbecamethefrstpermanentlyassignedRussianOrthodoxpriestinUnalaska.HebuiltachurchalongwithlocalAleuts.FatherVeniaminofalsodevelopedanAleutalphabetandtranslatedscripturefromRussianintothenatvelanguage.In1867theUnitedStatesgovernmentpurchasedtheTerritoryofAlaska.OneoftheprimereasonswastohaveaccesstotherichfursealrookeriesinthePribilofIslandsnorthwestofUnalaska.LocalmenworkedinthePribilofshuntngsealduringthesummersandseaoterduringthewinter.TheAlaskagoldrusharoundthe1890schangedUnalaskastradefromfurtocoalandsupplies.ShipsboundforthenortherngoldfeldsandfshinggroundswouldstopinUnalaskaforfuelandsupplies.Inthe1920sactvitesofthissloweddownandeventuallydroppedofduetocoalbeingreplacedwithoil.Inthe1930sherringfsherytookofandthriveduntlWorldWarIIapproached.Inthesummerof1940theU.S.NavyappropriatedthePortofDutchHarborareaonAmaknakIsland.ThelocalcommunityrespondedandincorporatedaFirstClassCitywhichtheycalledUnalaska.ThebusinessofbeinganewcitywouldhavetowaitforwithinafewmonthsJapanwouldinvadeandsubsequentlybombtheislandsonJune3and41943.
