What is the time difference from the ‘Lower 48’?
Unalaska/Port of Dutch Harbor is in the Alaska Central Time Zone (We are 4 hours behind Eastern Standard Time and 1 hour behind Pacific Standard Time).
What is the population?
Approximately 4,300 year-round residents and 5,000-10,000 seasonal transient workers.
Will I see my favorite "Deadliest Catch" boat and captain on my visit?
Although it isn't likely, if you happen to be in the area during the month of October, that would be the best opportunity to catch a glimpse of your favorite boat or captain. No gurantees can be made as we are simply the main delivery port for the crab fleet.
Will my cell phone work in Unalaska/Port of Dutch Habor?
Unfortunately, cell phone towers are limited in the Unalaska/Dutch Harbor area. In most cases, it will be necessary to contact one of our local service providers to obtain more information on service availibility, sim cards, and/or phone cards, which are all available for purchase at Alaska Wireless Communications and TelAlaska.
What type of activities does the community offer?
We are so glad you asked, the City of Unalaska has a fantastic Parks, Culture and Receation department, which includes the community center, library, aquatics center, gym, indoor track, and 9 parks throughout the city. Numerous organizations sponsor events throughout the year ranging from ice cream socials to live auctions. Birding, hiking, exploring, fishing, beach combing, and whale watching are just some of the outdoor activities there are to enjoy. Checkout our community calendar for upcoming events. What kind of transportation is available?
There are several taxi cab companies to choose from or rent a vehicle from North Port Rentals or B.C. Vehicle Rental
Is there public access to the internet?
Yes, the Unalaska Public Library offers free internet access with a valid library card.
What kinds of tours are available?
We have a variety of tours to fit your needs. You can take a land tour with Extra Mile Tours. Fishing charters with Miss Alyssa or the Lucille. An air tour can be arranged with Peninsula Airways (Pen Air), and kayaking, hiking, biking tours, and marine charters are available through Aleutian Adventure Sports.
What should I bring to wear?
Dressing in layers is suggested so you are prepared for both sunbreaks and rain showers. Windproof clothing is highly suggested. Keep in mind that our average year-round temperature is between 40 and 50 degrees.
I’m looking for a place to live, what are my options?
The best advice we can give is to make lodging reservations well ahead of your scheduled visit. Housing is very limited. For availability, try the Unalaska Advertiser.
Will I be able to get a job on one of the "Deadliest Catch" boats?

Do I need to purchase a land use permit?
Much of the land on Unalaska, Amaknak, and Sedanka Islands is privately owned by the Ounalashka Corporation. The O.C. requires individuals to purchase a land use permit before hiking, camping, or other land use. For more information, check out the O.C. website.
